Preliminary Recourse of FSSPX Rejected: The Vatican’s deadline to respond to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) regarding its preliminary recourse against the July 2 decree declaring six bishops automatically excommunicated has now passed, notes @Michael Haynes The FSSPX submitted its recourse to the Holy See on July 11. Under canon law, the competent authority had 30 days to respond. With that period now expired without a decision, the FSSPX can proceed to the next stage of its canonical challenge. Canon 1735 provides that when no decision is issued within the prescribed 30 days, the time limit for presenting hierarchical recourse begins to run from the 30th day.
A Mexican bishop has issued a decree restricting laypeople from assuming roles proper to ordained ministers in liturgical celebrations. Bishop Carlos Enrique Samaniego López of Texcoco issued the decree on 10 August, citing “irregular practices” that distort the priestly ministry and the sacred character of liturgical acts. It prohibits former seminarians, religious, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and other faithful not instituted in the stable ministry of acolyte from presiding over celebrations of the Word, funeral rites, sacramentals or other liturgical acts proper to ordained ministers. It also forbids non-clerics from wearing the alb or “any sacred ornament or vestment reserved uniquely and exclusively to the clergy”, both within and outside liturgical celebrations. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has announced that it will continue its annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. Following the episcopal consecrations on July 1 in Ecône, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes withdrew permission for the SSPX to celebrate public Masses, administer sacraments, or organize public prayers at Lourdes. In an August 22 statement, Fr. Gonzague Peignot, superior of the FSSPX in France, announced that the Fraternity intends to continue coming to Lourdes every year, “Our Lady does not deserve to be abandoned despite the obstacles,” he said. The FSSPX expressed 'sorrow and incomprehension', questioning the bishop's decision and pointing to the interreligious Christian-Muslim pilgrimage that was welcomed at the sanctuary in October 2025.
